I have been so sore! And of course, I missed a day last week, not good. I figured I wasn’t quite ready for a crossfit WOD yet. So I’ve stuck with the weights, and my daily 3 mile walk. One workout, I decided to put a little bit of the crossfit concept into play by not resting between reps. I went lighter knowing that I wouldn’t last long. I couldn’t believe how quickly I ran out of gas.

Bottom line is, I’m not sure how much of a WOD I can get through. Guess I’ll just have to give it a try here soon and see what happens. It will perhaps be tough on the ego, lol.

Why did I go so long without exercising?

What a fool I’ve been. I’ve let life get in the way of staying fit, bad idea. Anyway, I survived the first few workouts. Not Crossfit you understand, just some basic exercise with weights and calisthenics to get the bod used to the idea. I started on Sunday, Tuesday was very painful. By yesterday, it wasn’t quite so bad. I’ve also walked my three miles every day. Planning on a little bike ride tomorrow, then later in the day another round of weights. I’ll take Sunday off.

One thing that will never change is the satisfaction you feel when you are done with the workout, love that feeling!

I’m going to begin with my very basic Crossfit for Old Farts on Monday. I’ve got the simple WOD from Crossfit.com. I’m feeling pretty excited about it. I really love the way exercise melts away the stress, at least it does for me. It also helps when you have to open a pickle jar!

So, first day back on the weights in many, many months, went pretty well. Tried to go easy on myself, still had a hard time washing my hair afterwards though… Nothing complicated, just some basics. I had just finished my 3 mile walk. So I stretched out my legs and back a little, did some crunches, pushups, then to the weights. Three different styles of curls, bent over row, three styles of flys, including bench, behind the head dumbbell press, and bench press. Finished off with some dips off the edge of the bench.

Two sets of ten for everything, except the bench. Should’a taken some weight off but I was too lazy. My plan is to do this every other day for a week or so to see how my body reacts. I’ve found some great basic crossfit routines for beginners over at crossfit.com.

I’m a little concerned about the running aspect. I used to run frequently, but have had some problems with an injury on the left side. My plan is to walk to a soccer field about 1/2 a mile away, stretch after the warmup walk there, and try slowly jogging the 400 on the cushy grass field. 400 is pretty short so I’ll keep my fingers crossed.

I’m also gonna try and give my body it’s best chance of getting back into shape in other ways. Make a serious effort to eat better, stay away from the junk fried crap as much as possible. Stay with my vitamins and mineral supplement, and I’m thinking of starting on Pro Trauma, made by Progena. It’s designed to aid sore muscle recovery, seems like it might be useful! More on that later.

As I said earlier, I’m concerned about making myself so sore that I’ll be miserable if I jump right into too much of a crossfit routine right away. So I’m going to do my usual 3 mile walk today. That’s been keeping my weight somewhat in check. I’m probably about 10 pounds heavier than I’d like to be. When I get back from the walk I’m going to do a simple and light weight session. Nothing remotely like a crossfit routine. Just a message to my body that says “Get ready you lazy turd”.

The plan is to continue this approach for a week or so while I contemplate my “lite” version of crossfit for old farts. I’m thinking I’ll head over to where the serious folks hang out, crossfit.com, and work on putting together a beginners set of WOD’s

Will Crossfit Work for a Sedentary Computer Dweeb who used to exercise a lot?

I’m gonna give it a shot and find out. I’ve been lazy too long and I feel the need to get fitter soon or it’ll be too late. Since I’m not a kid anymore, I’m concerned that the rigors of crossfit will make it impossible for me to get outta bed after just the first WOD. So I’m gonna have to approach it slowly or suffer intensely.

I’m also going the extreme minimalistic approach equipment wise. I’ve got a fine set of steel weights and bench the living room collecting dust (yep, single), a chin up bar in the garage, two cool bicycles and a trainer, a yoga ball, and lots of tools and scrap material laying around to build boxes and stuff.

I’ve been fortunate to know some really cool folks in my life and one of them is Rick, owner of Meditrend/Progena. He has been selling high quality supplements and vitamins, mostly to the medical professional community, for many years. He has a few niche products that could be very interesting for my survival. I’ll let you know how they work for me.

Wish me luck, It should be interesting…

Things have been very crazy around the factory over at US Glove Inc. They’ve almost recovered from our move to the new factory late last year, what a pain that was… but the extra space sure is great.

Anyway, I wanted to take a minute and let all of you crossfit hard bodies out there know that we haven’t forgotten about you. As luck would have it, the next door neighbor is into crossfit big time. He does his WOD up at a crossfit box in Bernalillo, Crossfit Sandstorm. He’s offered to do some in the box testing of product ideas we come up with, most of which have been suggested by our readers here on our blog, and at Crossfit.com.

Calling these crossfit gloves is certainly a stretch, but hey, that’s what people search for… A lot of folks have been buying the basic crossfit palm protector already, but we have better ideas coming down the pipe. What you see up above is one of our experiments that is being tested at the local crossfit box. We’ve taken our basic palm protector and opened up the finger holes. That way, when you switch from pullups to pushups, the palm protector can easily flatten out so you won’t need to remove it, saving valuable time. We also got rid of the D shaped buckle attachment that the hook and loop strap used to thread through, making it much faster to take on and off. We’ll keep you posted on how our friend likes this design, and what he recommends as a next step in the design process.

We also have several other concepts in the works. With the Olympics coming up this summer, our production team is maxed out trying to keep up with the demand for US Glove’s top selling gymnastic grips and wrist supports. No worries though, they’ll make sure our development of great crossfit products doesn’t slip through the cracks!

Using a gymnastics grip for Crossfit

It’s come to our attention that people who are involved in crossfit training are buying several models of the US Glove gymnastics grips for hand protection. We’ve had some discussions with them on the phone for feed back, but we’d like to do better. So we thought we’d try and get some input from the crossfit community on what they would like in a training glove.

Some of the questions that come to our minds are things like:

How stiff does the leather need to be?

What type of closure is best, buckle or Velcro?

Do crossfit folks want a dowel attached to the glove like gymnasts do?

How many finger holes are best?

So tell us what you’d like to see in a good crossfit glove and we’ll build it!
